At the threshold of evolution, on the edge of extinction, in the harsh dawn of an untested Earth, all the seeds of domination were there. Long before life took hold, before eyes could see, it was there hiding in plain sight. Camouflaged in the Earth’s primordial consciousness, billions of years before truth became an artifact, the roots of subterfuge took hold. There, in the dark daylight of an anonymous pond, a pre-life assemblage of unsuspecting microbes languished. Oblivious to their fate. Trusting in the universe. Innocence their only flaw. Then, suddenly gone. Without a trace. Cheated out of existence by an evolving embryonic cell lying in wait. The faceless microorganism proving its dominance. Claiming its link on life’s chain. The nameless microbes condemned to obscurity. Deceived. Devoured. No one the wiser. Forget your false pride. Your terrestrial arrogance. Thinking that deception is an attribute born of human nature. Treachery is not an invention of man. It was there from the beginning. It was always there.

From the Novel “I” by Lucien Rush
